When someone mentions French films, people tend to think of the Festival de Cannes . Festival de Cannes is a huge film award show in France. Some would call it the Oscars of France. Winning a Cannes legitimizes filmmakers and puts their name out into the world. American classics like Pulp Fiction and Les Misérables both were awarded in the past and prove that the Cannes represent great films and filmmakers. This past year the winners of Cannes were expansive and grabbed films from all over the world. The winner of 2021’s Best First Film was Croatian filmmaker, Antoneta Kusijanovic for their debut film Murina . The contemporary coming-of-age is about a teenage girl, who has to navigate her controlling, abusive father. The film is praised for its hidden symbolism and complex character tropes. Position Paper #3 - Depictions of Women and Minorities

Image
The past hundreds of years have been bleak and inhumane for women and minorities. Of all 195 countries in the world, it is still illegal for women to vote in 2 of those, and 10 more countries that make it nearly impossible to vote. In 2020, the pandemic revealed how bad gender inequality is in all aspects of our society. One statistic showed that women were 24% more likely to lose their job, than men. At the current pace, it will take 250 years for women to earn pay equal to that of men. At the 2021 Commission on the Status of Women, Secretary-General António Guterres stressed that "We need to move beyond fixing women, and instead fix our systems." Which is a statement I could not agree more with. As depressing and real as all of the above information is, I would like to focus on the positive growth we've seen for women around the world. According to US News , these are the best 5 countries for women based on a survey taken earlier this year.  Starting with number five,...

Position Paper #2 - Digital Access

As many of you may know, Argentina is a country in South America. It is known for tango and the community's great love for fútbol. Argentina is a democracy and has a government set up very similar to the United States. Citizens have a comparable amount of freedom as us, Americans. According to DataReportal , Argentina has a population of approximately 45.4 million people. Of those millions of people, 55.19 million have mobile connections. I'm not quite sure how that works. Maybe some of the dogs have cellular devices. That does make it clear that Argentina is a very connected country. Mobile phones are very accessible. Of those 55.19 million mobile users, 36.32 million people use the internet. That is about 80% of the entire population. Also, 36.00 million people from Argentina are active social media users. Which is 79.3% of the total population.  In the past year, the population has grown by 412 thousand while the total amount of mobile connections has gone down by -2.6%. I ...

Position Paper #1 - International News

As controversial as they are, I cannot say I don't love eating up all the drama. One thing Aftonbladet nails is making every story feel like the most important news of the day. They never fail to make their readers excited and interested, which is probably why they have been so successful for so long. Not that I agree with everything they say, I still do expect to see them continue to grow.  This is all I could find left for the paper on Aftonbladet :((
